Cal Women's Lacrosse in The Community

Who would think that driving only fifteen minutes away from Berkeley would be a journey that gave my teammates and I a view of a world far away from our own small community of Cal student athletes? This past fall my team organized a mentorship p rogram between the Cal lacrosse team and seventh graders from Alliance Academy in East Oakland. As their school lacks many basic resources other public schools have at their educational level, we gave the students our perspective and experience about many topics - the difference between universities and colleges, applications, SAT's, as well as nutrition and time management. And, of course, we introduced them to the sport of lacrosse.

For each child that participated, we assigned an end-of -semester project in which they identified specific goals to achieve each year, starting from eighth grade until the beginning of their freshman year in college. Each academic year was broken down into four categories: personal, academic, extra-curricular, community service. Each child was asked to conclude their project with a statement of their own life goal. These ranged from being accepted to an Ivy League school, becoming a collegiate and/or professional athlete, doctor, lawyer and veterinarian, owning their own store, and simply making their family happy. Although each student had different goals, through this project they began to realize how hard one must work to see results, academically, athletically and socially.

The most memorable part of this experience with the Alliance students was the day they all came to the Cal campus. We gave them a tour of campus, ate at Crossroads, met professors, went to the top of the Campanile, showed them our athletic facilities, and went onto Memorial field to teach them how to play lacrosse. It is one thing to talk to the kids about colleges and being a student athlete, but by having these students come to Cal for a day enabled them to get a hand on experience of what a college life is like. We met with Professor Palmer from the American Studies Department who was kind enough to explain Cal from an academic perspective. Surprisingly the students asked her a lot of questions regarding SAT's, financial aid, homework, and even current issues. I think by meeting Professor Palmer in such a personal setting allowed the kids from Alliance to realize how college is not intimidating and in fact very reachable for these students.

This mentorship program was a tremendous experience for me and my teammates, leaving a huge impression on us, giving my teammates and I a real appreciation of how fortunate we are to be student athletes at Cal. What seemed like a project that might be of interest to some students at a local middle school became something that clearly touched a lot of young lives as well as the Cal lacrosse team. And who knows, hopefully this experience may help motivate some of the students to achieve goals that they had never thought were possible!

Women's Basketball "We Assist, You Assist Challenge"

California Women's Basketball challenges you to partner with us and pledge the "We Assist, You Assist Challenge" to bring much needed help to deserving Bay Area families.

For each assist recorded this season, your pledge will be matched. The more assists -- the more the pledge and the larger the donation. To further the Challenge, Cal Women's Basketball and Coach Boyle will match the donation up to $10,000.

The best part is that all of these pledges become a team donation to The Lockwood Elementary School in East Oakland and the "Quarter Meal" Program at the Berkeley Food and Housing Project.

Your participation now is so important because both the school and the Meal Program serve the needs of local low income children and adults and help build a better community.

JOIN US IN THIS CHALLENGE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE. To get involved, fill out a Pledge Form and drop it in the mail to the Women's Basketball Office at 129 Haas Pavilion - Berkeley, CA 94720. Or you can contact Sarah Holsinger at 510-643-3787 or sholsinger@berkeley.edu.

Thank you for your support and enthusiasm.
